What Happens if You Add CBD to Your Morning Coffee?

As 2019 has gone on it's started to feel like there's practically nothing that people won't put CBD in. Their vape pens. Skincare. Their food. And, in that most loved of all morning beverages, coffee. But do coffee - or rather the caffeine in it - and CBD mix well or is that idea rather counterintuitive?


Like so much of the research work into CBD, just how they - and the people drinking CBD spiked lattes - might be affected is still being examined. That being said there have been some notable studies that have looked at what happens when you mix caffeine and CBD that returned some interesting findings.


A study published in The Journal of Internal Medicine CBD and coffee activate some of the same pathways in the brain.  According to the study "the neurotransmitters related to the endocannabinoid system — the same ones affected by CBT—decreased after drinking four to eight cups of coffee in a day. That’s the opposite of what occurs after someone uses hemp"


“It’s unclear at this point in time the exact interaction between CBD and caffeine,” she said. “At low doses, CBD is a stimulant and in higher doses it can cause sedation. Someone’s reaction to a combination of these compounds would not be easily predictable because various doses of each would affect the response.”


As to the exact effects of mixing CBT with caffeine, a lot more research needs to be done, but there is plenty of anecdotal evidence out there. Some people report that adding CBD to their coffee seems to counter the downside to coffee drinking that some people experience, the jittery, on edge, wired feeling that isn't always pleasant. In other words they get the benefits of a good morning cup of coffee without the downside if they add a little CBT.


We make no claims that adding CBT to your coffee will do anything, but if you were to give it a try we have a few suggestions. The first is that you make sure that you are adding the right stuff.


As CBT becomes more and more popular there are an increasing number of not so great offerings out there. Opt for higher quality products that are lab tested and certified to be what they claim.

As to how much one should add it seems that everyone is affected differently by CBD, so start small and work your way up until you find the right balance for you. If you do find that the combination of coffee and CBD suits you it would be a great way to fit CBD into a busy day and if it makes that already yummy latte even more enjoyable that can hardly be a bad thing can it?
