Here’s some more recent vaping/ e-cigarette / ENDS (electronic nicotine delivery system) history for you…
Vaping, an industry worth over $14bn a year (in vape sales) globally and growing at 20% CAGR (compound annual growth rate… 20% is a lot), has faced an uphill battle against Big Tobacco and local governments who quite enjoy the tax revenue from people smoking (US tobacco companies have paid the government $100bn to date and owe a further $146bn).
It was only in 2006 that electronic cigarettes were introduced in Europe and the United States. And only even more recently (2014) where you have been able to buy CBD Eliquid for your CBD vape pen.
In 2008 Turkey banned the sale of e-cigarettes after Health Ministry Drugs and Pharmacy Director, Mahmut Tokaç, claimed that e-cigarettes are just as harmful as smoking regular cigarettes (crazy right?). FYI, cigarette taxes in Turkey are 87%...
In September 2008 the WHO (World Health Organization) stated that it does not consider e-cigs to be a legitimate smoking cessation aid product. This also makes no sense. Cigarette sales are declining at ~8% per year and vaping sales are growing. Seems correlated to us.
A month later a study by Health New Zealand conducted detailed quantitative research and analysis on the safety of vaping. (here’s the study - http://www.casaa.org/wp-content/uploads/10-30-08-RuyanCartridgeReport30-Oct-08.pdf).
The study involved several world class universities and laboratories in New Zealand and Canada. The conclusion of the study was that e-cigarettes are 100 to 1000 times less dangerous than smoking.
Here’s a summary of the results:
“It is very safe relative to cigarettes, and also safe in absolute terms on all measurements we have applied. Using micro-electronics it vaporizes, separately for each puff, very small quantities of nicotine dissolved in propylene glycol, two small well-known molecules with excellent safety profiles, – into a fine aerosol. Each puff contains one third to one half the nicotine in a tobacco cigarette’s puff. The cartridge liquid is tobacco-free and no combustion occurs.”
